After a long flight, the last thing you want is to stand in an arrivals hall working out how to reach your hotel. Airport-to-city transport is also where many visitors overpay or get caught by scams. Deciding before you land makes the end of the journey calm. Here’s how the main options compare.
The options at a glance
Train, metro or airport express
Best for: solo travelers and couples with manageable luggage, arriving during the day.
- Usually the cheapest option and often the fastest, because it avoids road traffic.
- Many cities have a dedicated airport express, and some let you tap a contactless bank card at the gate.
- Less convenient with heavy bags, stairs or several changes.
- Check the last departure time if you land late; some services stop around midnight.
Airport bus
Best for: budget travelers, and places where the bus stops near your hotel.
- Often cheap, with luggage space underneath.
- Slower in traffic. Check where it stops compared with where you’re staying.
Official taxi
Best for: late arrivals, heavy luggage and short distances.
- Door to door, with no planning needed.
- Use the official taxi rank, not a driver who approaches you inside the terminal.
- Some airports have fixed fares to the city; others use meters. Find out which before you get in.
- Can be expensive for long distances or in heavy traffic.
Ride-hailing app
Best for: travelers with data on arrival in cities where the apps operate at the airport.
- You see the price before you ride and pay in the app.
- Pickup points can be hard to find at big airports; follow the signs for app pickups.
- Surge pricing can make them expensive at busy times.
Pre-booked transfer
Best for: families, groups, late-night arrivals and first-time visits.
- A driver meets you, often with a name sign, and takes you straight to your accommodation.
- The price is agreed in advance, which avoids surprises.
- Good reliable services track your flight and wait if you’re delayed. Check the waiting time and what happens if your flight is very late.
- Shared shuttles are cheaper but stop at several hotels.

How to choose
- What time do you land? Late at night, the options narrow to taxis, ride-hailing and pre-booked transfers.
- How much luggage and how many people? Once there are three or four of you with bags, a taxi or transfer can cost about the same per person as the train, and be far easier.
- Where exactly are you staying? A hotel next to a main station makes the train obvious. One far from any station favors a car.
- How tired will you be? After a long-haul flight, paying a little more for door-to-door travel is often money well spent.
Avoiding common problems
- Ignore unofficial offers in the arrivals hall. Walk to the official taxi rank, the ride-hailing pickup point or your pre-booked driver.
- Know the rough price before you leave the airport, so you can spot an unreasonable one.
- Have a backup. Save your accommodation’s address in the local language and a screenshot of your route in case your phone has no signal.
- Carry a little local cash for places where cards don’t work.
- Check the drop-off point. Some old-town streets are closed to cars, so you may have a short walk at the end.

Look up your arrival airport’s official website a few days before you travel. It will list the train, bus and taxi options, prices and operating hours. With that decided, all you need to do on landing is follow the signs.
